Kelp

Kelp is a type of seaweed which can easily be encountered on rugged coastlines all over the world. While the plant can be found growing in sparse areas, most of them grow in abundance in “kelp forests”, which are usually found along shallow seas. There are many varieties of kelp all over the world, but the three most popular varieties are bladderwrack, rockweed, and laminaria. These three kelp varieties are the ones most used in the production of health supplements.

In botany, kelp is categorized as algae. This seaweed is an abundant source of basic vitamins and minerals, together with important trace minerals. Kelp is dependent upon the sea and its multitude of natural resources in order for it to flourish. With the sea being an abundant provider of nutrients that kelp needs to grow, it’s no wonder that the seaweed can be found in almost all coastlines across the globe, with many specimens able to grow as fast as two feet per day.

Seaweed is naturally rich in alkali, an ionic salt which helps to balance acidity levels in the human body. Indeed, kelp’s health benefits has helped it to become a popular organic diet resource, and it is regularly becoming a main ingredient in many health supplement products sold out of most high-quality health food outlets. Kelp can be found being sold in powder or liquid form, but the most popular health supplements containing kelp are usually produced in either capsules or tablets.

Scientists who have studied kelp and its many varieties have reported a long list of nutrients present in the seaweed.  These include growth hormones, enzymes, vitamins, proteins, and important minerals such as iron, calcium, and potassium, just to name a few.  All in all, it is reported that over 70 vitamins and minerals are found in kelp.

The high iodine content of kelp can help increase metabolism and energy in the body, as well as promote weight loss. The thyroid functions are also highly improved, and since the nutrients found in kelp can easily be absorbed by the body, kelp consumption in the form of health supplements can aid in cases of vitamin and mineral deficiency.

Aside from the health benefits mentioned, kelp has been discovered to be able to reduce arthritis pain, improve the health of the liver, boost the immune system and fight off diseases such as cancer.  It can also aid in the prevention or reduction of constipation, hair loss, and even lower your cholesterol levels.
