Broccoli is a vegetable member of the cabbage family. It is a plant with a flower that is eaten before the bud opens. It is closely related to cauliflower, but broccoli is more nutritious because it contains high amount of Vitamin C and Carotene.  It is also 125% higher in Vitamin C content than a fresh orange. Aside from Vitamin C, broccoli is also rich in iron and vitamins A, E, and K. It is also a good source of calcium.

The Italian vegetable broccoli is believed to have originated in the eastern Mediterranean. However, the original broccoli which is the purple sprouting broccoli existed already in Europe. It was first mentioned in France in the year 1560. The green Italian broccoli has been known in the Europe continent and reached England in 18th century. It is defined by the Philip Miller’s Gardener’s Dictionary (1724 edition) as “sprout colli-flower” or “Italian asparagus”. In the year 1922, the Italian D’Arrigo brothers, Stephani and Andrea, introduced broccoli in New York and Boston area. They came to San Jose, California, and planted some broccoli. The Italian brothers made this into business, and they had been successful with the brand name “Andy Boy”, the name of Stephano’s two-year old son. The vegetable reached the United States in the 1920s.

Recently, the consumption of broccoli has been higher because it is tested by some medical groups to reduce the risk of cancers. In addition, broccoli also contains mustard oil called isothiocyanates that breaks down into compounds when cooked.

The human body must maintain the natural pH balance which is between 7.35 until 7.45. The neutral pH reading is 7. Below 7 is acidic and above 7 is alkaline. The higher the pH reading is the better. This is because there is more alkaline in the body if the pH is higher, which gives more supply of oxygen and fluid content in the system. Likewise, when there is low pH reading, then most likely the supply of the oxygen and fluid in the body is limited. The body must contain 80% of alkaline and 20% of acid only. This can be done through eating 80% alkaline forming food. By consuming this amount of alkaline, people will have a longer life span and a healthier body.

Fruits and vegetables are the common food that mostly contains alkaline. Green vegetables such as asparagus, cabbage, and lettuce contain higher alkaline food. Raw spinach, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, and lemons have also a good alkaline content. Yet, be sure to wash and clean this food before eating or cooking them so that you are sure that they do not contain harmful chemicals.

Broccoli is also an example of alkaline forming food. Alkaline forming foods are the foods that we should take in the body because it gives a strong immune system. Consumption of this vegetable is very healthy for the system. It also helps maintain the ph balance of the body to keep it away from all the diseases. It as well prevents the cell to degenerate.
